Our journey

It is so easy to get lost in this journey and forget that there are two of you involved. Try not to lose focus on why you started and each other, you are already a family of two and you will have to try your best to keep this foundation as strong as possible. This won’t always be easy and sometimes you may not understand each other as well as you did before but don’t forget it’s a journey so you can make it through.

Some practical advice for couples:

Couple walking with young child
  • Try to agree together your limits and what are game changers for you. It’s important that you are both on the same page and you have a mutual desire for the same thing
  • Take this time as preparation for becoming parents. Agree what roles you will take, what kind of parents you want to be and the values you want to raise your children with
  • Make time for each other – this journey and the treatments can be taxing, emotional and exhausting. It’s easy to get caught up in your own bubble so make time that is specifically just about you as a couple; have some fun couples counselling – this may just help you talk through the stuff you don’t find easy to say to each other; there is no harm in getting help, this is new to you both.
Happy couple looking out of window
Here are some tips to stay connected:
  • Start a journal or scrapbook together of your journey to become parents; something to look back on when you get there
  • Plan a romantic getaway – a change of scenery is always a nice way to reconnect when you get caught up in the day to day
  • Make date night a weekly feature; even if it’s a takeaway and a movie at home
  • Be spontaneous – meet your partner from work unexpectedly or tidy up when you wouldn’t normally; it’s the little things
